Most fairway woods ask you to pick distance or control. Callaway's Quantum Max D leans hard toward control, and in a 28-club test nothing hit the target more often.
What's new
Max D is the draw-biased member of Callaway's 2026 Quantum family, released in February in 15, 18 and 21 degrees. Behind its Ai-Optimized face sits Speed Wave 2.0, and a Step Sole Design handles turf contact.
An OptiFit4 hosel adjusts loft and lie. Pricing matches the standard Max, sits a step above the TD and comes in below Max Fast, so this is mainstream fairway wood money rather than a premium stretch.
How it plays
Accuracy scored 9.5, best of all 28 clubs tested, and the club tied for first overall. Shots that start right drift back instead of running away, and testers found it straighter than they expected from a draw head.
Distance holds up too, at 8.6. Ball speed averaged 131.9 mph, carry reached 203.15 yards and total distance 214.34, on a 14.25-degree launch. Forgiveness rates 8.4 and feel 8.2.
Where it lacks
Spin is high at 3750 rpm. Paired with a tall launch, that suits a moderate swing speed and costs a fast one real yards, since the ball climbs and stalls instead of running out.
Workability and value both land at 7.9. A draw-biased head resists a hold-off fade, and anyone whose miss is already left is paying for help they do not need.
“If your bad fairway wood goes right, this is the straightest fix we have seen.”- The Club Stand gear team
Reasons to buy
- Draw bias pulls shots back toward center, so a fade-prone swing loses far fewer balls right
- Speed Wave 2.0 holds ball speed up when contact slips low on the face
- Shares an OptiFit4 hosel with other Quantum woods, so loft and lie settings carry over
Reasons to think twice
- Spin near 3750 rpm and a high launch will balloon shots for fast swingers
- A golfer who already hooks it gets nothing from the draw bias and may lose shots left
- Four Quantum fairway woods share the shelf, and picking the wrong one is an expensive mistake
