Callaway built the Quantum Max for distance, and on a launch monitor it delivers. It topped a 2026 fairway wood test for ball speed. You give up some accuracy and forgiveness to get that speed.
What's new
The Quantum Max is the long-hitting member of Callaway's 2026 fairway wood family, released in February. Its Ai-Optimized face uses Speed Wave 2.0, and the sole uses Callaway's Step Sole design.
Lofts come in 15, 18, and 21 degrees, and the OptiFit4 hosel adjusts loft and lie. Price lands at flagship fairway wood money, level with the Max D, a little above the TD and below the Max Fast.
How it plays
Ball speed averaged 133.45 mph in testing, the highest number in the field. That speed produced 209.29 yards of carry and 221.28 total, with spin at 3307 rpm, and our distance score of 9.2 ranked second in the class.
Speed Wave 2.0 earns its keep on thin contact. Shots caught below the sweet spot keep more of their pace than you would expect, and feel scores an 8.3. Accuracy (8.1) and workability (8.0) are respectable on their own terms.
Where it lacks
Forgiveness scores 7.8 and accuracy 8.1, both at the bottom of the Quantum family. Testers found the distance outstanding and the dispersion ordinary, so a golfer who misses often will see it.
Gapping needs thought, too. The 21 degree head sits a long way from the 18, which makes it an awkward 4-wood substitute, and with fast, mid, and draw-biased options on the same rack, picking a version is harder than it should be.
“Nothing in the test produced more ball speed. Just expect your misses to wander a bit further.”- The Club Stand gear team
Reasons to buy
- Led the 2026 fairway wood test in ball speed, and by a clear margin
- Speed Wave 2.0 keeps ball speed up on strikes low on the face
- An OptiFit4 hosel adjusts both loft and lie from a single sleeve
Reasons to think twice
- Accuracy and forgiveness rank last among the Quantum fairway woods
- A 21 degree head sits too far from the 18 to replace most 4-woods cleanly
- Fast, mid, and draw-biased versions make choosing within the family harder than it should be
