Callaway calls the Quantum Mini Spinner a scoring wood, and the label fits. It launches like a high-lofted fairway wood but spins more and comes down steeper, so long approaches stop sooner once they land.

What's new

Three lofts make up the range: a 21-degree 7-wood, a 24-degree 9-wood and a 27-degree 11-wood. Callaway pairs a steel crown with a carbon-composite sole to push the center of gravity up, and that higher CG is where the extra spin comes from.

Each club is also 0.75 inch shorter than a conventional fairway wood, with an Ai-optimized face, a Step Sole and a fixed hosel. Every head ships on a Project X Denali Frost Silver shaft and sells on its own at top-of-range fairway wood money.

How it plays

Accuracy scores highest at 8.5, with workability close behind at 8.3. A compact, deep head and a shorter build make it easier to aim than a standard fairway wood, and the added 500 to 800 rpm brings the ball down steeply enough to stop quickly.

Forgiveness rates 8.2 and feel 7.9, solid numbers for a club meant to attack greens from distance. Fitting sessions at Callaway's performance center echoed the feel numbers, and the scores hold up that warmth without overselling it.

Where it lacks

Distance scores 7.8, the lowest of its six numbers, and that is by design. Callaway built the Mini Spinner for spin rather than yards, so anyone who wants a 7-wood that runs the ball down the fairway should shop elsewhere.

A steel crown and carbon sole add weight, and slower swings may find the head harder to move. Then there is the price: a niche club at the top of fairway wood pricing, and buying two lofts adds up fast.

“It gives up some yards, but a 7-wood that stops this quickly earns its spot in the bag.”
- The Club Stand gear team

Reasons to buy

  • A raised center of gravity adds 500 to 800 rpm of spin over a traditional 7-wood, so long approaches stop sooner
  • Built 0.75 inch shorter than a standard fairway wood, it is easier to control from long range
  • Lofts of 21, 24 and 27 degrees fill the gap between a hybrid and a long iron with a steeper descent

Reasons to think twice

  • It is not built for distance, and the long game shows it
  • A steel crown and carbon sole add weight that slower swings may struggle to move
  • Specialty club priced at the top of the fairway wood range
