PXG built the Lightning Tour for golfers who want a small fairway wood that holds its line. Accuracy is its best score at 8.8, and it gives up surprisingly little distance for a head this compact.

What's new

The Lightning Tour is the player-spec version of PXG's Lightning fairway wood, released in December 2025 as a 2026 model. PXG offers it in 15 and 18 degrees, two lofts instead of six, with a 180 cc head at the lower loft and a 170 cc head at the higher one.

Both sit under a carbon fiber crown and use the same weighting as the standard Lightning: three sole ports and a hosel port that accept interchangeable weights from 2.5 to 20 g. Pricing matches the standard model too, and PXG has already cut it from the original list, which helps the 8.4 value score.

How it plays

Its tight grouping earns most of the praise. In the forward weight setting, one launch monitor test recorded 106.7 mph of club speed, 149.7 mph of ball speed and 249.2 yards of carry, with shots landing inside a 14.2 yard dispersion window.

Launch measured 11.2 degrees with 2584 rpm of spin. Distance and forgiveness each scored 8.3, feel 8.2 and workability 8.1, and one test rated it 8.5 overall, so there is no weak category here, even if accuracy is the only one that really stands out.

Where it lacks

Two lofts cover a fitted bag that needs one or two strong woods, but most sets have a gap higher up, and the Tour cannot fill it. Nothing above 18 degrees is offered.

Size matters too. A 180 cc head looks small to anyone used to a max-size fairway wood, and PXG's fitting network gets thin outside the major golf markets, which is a problem for a club whose weight ports work best when someone sets them for you.

“It hits the line you aim at. Just know the high lofts are not coming with it.”

Reasons to buy

  • Accuracy scored 8.8, and one test measured 14.2 yards of dispersion on 249.2 yards of carry
  • Three sole ports plus a hosel port take weights from 2.5 to 20 g, so flight can be tuned at a fitting
  • Compact 180 cc and 170 cc heads sit behind the ball like iron replacement woods

Reasons to think twice

  • Only 15 and 18 degrees are offered, so the higher lofts that fill real gaps in most sets are missing
  • Anyone stepping down from a max-size wood will find the 180 cc head small at address
  • PXG's fitting network thins out quickly once you leave the major golf markets
