PXG built the Secret Weapon to go long, and in a five-club mini driver test it did, finishing second for distance. It also finished last for forgiveness, which tells you who should buy it.

What's new

The Secret Weapon is a 300 cc mini driver lofted at 13 degrees. A thin titanium face does the hitting, and a carbon fiber composite crown saves weight up top.

Two 15 g weights and two 2.5 g weights screw into the back of a 300 g head, so a fitter has some room to change how the head behaves. PXG prices it at flagship mini-driver level, with no budget version alongside it.

How it plays

Distance carries this club. On the robot it ranked second of five for distance and second overall, beaten only by the GTS300 Mini, and its 9.2 distance score is the best number on its card.

Strike it well and it flies straight, too. Accuracy rates 8.3 and feel 8.2, so a good swing gets a solid response off the thin face. Workability comes in at 7.9, enough to hold a fade or a draw when a tee shot calls for one.

Where it lacks

Forgiveness scores 6.2, and the test put it last of the five. A compact face leaves less room for error, so heel and toe strikes give back more than they would with the other minis in the test.

Price adds to the problem. A 7.6 value score reflects flagship money for a specialty club, and anyone who mishits often will pay for distance they rarely see.

“Hit the middle and it nearly outruns everything in the class. Miss it and you will know right away.”

Reasons to buy

  • Second longest of five mini drivers in a robot test, and second overall behind the GTS300 Mini
  • Thin titanium face and a carbon fiber crown in a compact 300 cc head that hits well above its size
  • Two 15 g and two 2.5 g weights let a fitter shift mass around the back of the head

Reasons to think twice

  • Finished last of five for forgiveness, so off-center strikes cost more here than in rival minis
  • Sits at flagship mini-driver money, a hard ask for a club that may only come out on tight holes
  • A small face punishes the heel and toe misses that a full-size driver would shrug off
