Srixon had never built a super game improvement iron for women, the category that gives up almost everything for height and forgiveness. The ZXiR HL fills that gap. On course it earns its place, though the price takes more defending.

What's new

Super game improvement means a large, forgiving head designed to get the ball airborne with little effort. Dunlop sells this set as five-iron through pitching wedge plus an approach wedge, seven clubs in all, on a KBS Max 45 Ladies shaft.

Heads are cast from i-alloy, which Srixon says is 10 percent softer and less dense than 431 stainless steel. Behind a milled face, thickness varies across the hitting area so a mishit keeps more of its speed. Pricing sits at the premium end for a women's set.

How it plays

Forgiveness carries this iron. A 9.0 there puts it among the more forgiving sets in its class, and the ZXiR HL head it shares rated highly in a super game improvement test.

Shots climb fast and come down with spin, so approaches stop instead of skipping through the back of the green. Distance (8.2) and accuracy (8.1) are solid without leading anything. Feel scores an 8.4, and I credit the softer alloy for most of that.

Where it lacks

Shot-shapers will find little to work with. A 6.5 for workability reflects a big, high-spin head built to fly straight and high, and anyone who wants a low knockdown or a deliberate draw will be fighting it.

Value lands at 6.9 because seven irons cost premium money. Nobody robot-tested the women's version on its own either. Its numbers come from the shared head plus Srixon's component tuning, so book a fitting before you commit.

“Easy irons to hit and to like. The price asks you to be sure they fit before you buy.”

Reasons to buy

  • Forgiveness scores a 9.0, and off-center strikes hold their speed well enough to still find the green
  • Srixon's i-alloy is 10 percent softer than 431 stainless, which gives impact a cushioned feel
  • High launch and extra spin bring approach shots down steeply, so they stop quickly once they land

Reasons to think twice

  • Workability scores a 6.5, and shaping shots on purpose takes real effort with a head this large
  • Seven irons at premium money drag value down to a 6.9, well below its playing scores
  • The women's set never went through robot testing, so its scores lean on results from the shared head
