Wilson built the Staff Model X to go fast, and a 48-ball robot test backs that up. It is firm, it spins where a tour ball should, and it sells for less than the big names.
What's new
The Staff Model X is a four-piece urethane ball and a 2026 release from Wilson. A thin cast urethane cover wraps a firmer core, and the compression rating of 102 makes it the stiffest ball in the Wilson lineup.
Wilson aims it squarely at fast swingers who want a tour ball with some snap. It lands in the value tier for urethane balls, a little below a Pro V1x, which matters when a dozen disappears over a few rounds.
How it plays
Start with ball speed. In robot testing of 48 balls it posted the fastest driver ball speed in the field at an 86 mph swing and finished second at 102 mph, and that shows in a 9.1 distance score.
Off the tee the spin stays low, so drives bore through rather than balloon. Around the green it does the opposite and bites, which helps explain an 8.4 workability score, and testers rated it a mid-spin, high-speed pick that belongs in the same conversation as better-known tour balls.
Where it lacks
Firmness cuts both ways. A 102 compression core pays off for strong swings, but slower players will feel it, and an 8.0 for feel trails everything else it scored.
It also prefers warm days. In colder conditions some of the feel goes missing, and golfers who simply want a softer ball will be happier with a mid-compression model.
“If you swing hard, this ball gives you robot-test speed for less than the usual tour price.”- The Club Stand gear team
Reasons to buy
- Fastest driver ball speed of 48 balls tested at an 86 mph swing, and second at 102 mph
- Launches high and spins low off the tee, then grabs hard around the green
- Priced a little under a Pro V1x, so tour-ball performance comes without flagship money
Reasons to think twice
- At 102 compression it is the firmest ball Wilson makes, and slower swings may find it harsh
- Feel suffers in cold weather, so it plays best when the temperature is up
- Speed comes first here, so anyone after a soft, mid-compression feel should look elsewhere in the line
