Edel built the SMS UT to tolerate bad swings, and in testing nothing else in its class came close on forgiveness. The cost shows up in distance and accuracy.
What's new
The SMS UT is a 2026 driving iron with a fully forged body, a Flip-Weight sole and what Edel calls Swing-Matched rear weighting. That weight sits behind the face to steady it, which tells you where Edel's priorities lie.
Edel offers it at 20 degrees and 39 inches, with a KBS PGH shaft as standard. It sells individually and lands in the middle of the class on price, a fair ask for forged construction.
How it plays
Forgiveness does all the work in this club. It scored 9.5 there, a class best, and the tests point to a club built for reliability, one that holds its line when the strike wanders.
Launch numbers show a club that flies modestly: about 206 yards of carry and 217 total, with a launch of 11.75 degrees and roughly 3,728 rpm of spin. Feel rates a 7.5, solid if a long way short of buttery.
Where it lacks
Distance and accuracy each rate 6.5, and both sat at the bottom of the class in the test. Anyone buying a driving iron for extra yards off the tee will find better options in this class.
Workability also scores 6.5. The SMS UT wants to hit it straight and does not care to bend the ball, and with one loft and one length on offer, fitting it around your bag takes some compromise.
“Bag this for the mishit days and accept that it will never win a long-drive bet.”- The Club Stand gear team
Reasons to buy
- Forgiveness scores 9.5, the best in its 2026 class by a clear margin
- You get a fully forged body without paying top-of-class money
- A flip-weight sole helps keep the face on line when contact drifts off center
Reasons to think twice
- Distance and accuracy both finished at the bottom of the class in testing
- Edel makes it in a single loft and a single length
- Ball flight stays straight, so players who like to shape shots will feel boxed in
