MacGregor brought back the Toney Penna name for a forged players iron, and it beat most of the field. In a 15-model test it finished fourth, at a price that undercuts the big tour brands by a wide margin.
What's new
The Tour Forged CB arrived in August 2025 as a compact cavity back forged from 1020 carbon steel. MacGregor's set runs from a 4-iron at 22 degrees down to a pitching wedge at 45.
Nothing comes from stock. MacGregor builds each order to spec, which takes 10 to 15 business days, and the price lands in value territory while the head shape and forging belong with irons that cost far more.
How it plays
Fourth place out of 15 in a 2026 players iron test puts it ahead of several sets from much bigger companies. Forgiveness scores 8.8, high for a compact head, and both accuracy and workability come in at 8.5.
Distance rates 8.4, which is solid without leading the group. Feel earns an 8.7, and the iron also made the field in a 2026 super game improvement test, so testers also measured it against far more forgiving designs. I keep coming back to the value score of 9.6, the highest of its six marks.
Where it lacks
Expect to wait. A built-to-order set takes 10 to 15 business days, and you cannot walk out of a store with one the same afternoon.
Trying it first is harder too. MacGregor is a relaunched brand with a thin retail footprint, and although the forged feel is good, a few irons in the 2026 field felt better at impact.
“Fourth in a 15-iron test at this price? I would build a set before shopping the tour brands.”- The Club Stand gear team
Reasons to buy
- Finished fourth of 15 in a 2026 players iron test, ahead of several big-brand sets
- Forged 1020 carbon steel in a compact cavity for far less than typical players-iron money
- Every set is built to order, so loft and lie can be set to match your bag
Reasons to think twice
- Custom builds take 10 to 15 business days, so nothing ships off a shelf
- Feel scores well but sits short of the very best forged irons in the 2026 field
- MacGregor is a relaunched brand with few shops where you can hit a demo set
