Titleist built the U•505 to launch like a hybrid from a head that still looks like an iron. In a 2,100-shot test of seven driving irons, it carried farthest, rolled farthest, and took the top overall ranking.

What's new

The U•505 is a hollow forged steel body wrapped around a forged face insert with Max Impact Technology. Titleist offers it in 16, 18, 20 and 22 degrees, in right and left handed versions.

Stock shafting is the HZRDUS Black 4G HYB in graphite, a hybrid-style shaft that suits the club's intent. Fittings opened in July 2025 with shop stock in August, and it carries flagship money for a single club.

How it plays

Distance scores 9.5 here, and the testing backs it up: no club in the field carried longer or finished farther down the range. It won Best Overall and Best for Distance, and it has now topped the same test two years in a row.

Accuracy comes in at 9.1, which matters more than the yardage for a club you hit off the tee on tight holes. Shots climb quickly, the sole slides through a range of lies, and feel at 8.4 stays softer than the hollow build suggests.

Where it lacks

Forgiveness at 8.0 sits mid-pack, a step behind the most forgiving heads in the class, so it rewards a reasonably consistent swing.

Cost hurts more, since it sits near the top of the category and Titleist sells it by the club. Anyone with a high natural flight should hit it before buying, because the extra launch can turn into too much height.

“It flies like a hybrid, looks like an iron at address, and nothing in the test went farther.”
- The Club Stand gear team

Reasons to buy

  • Longest carry and total distance of the seven clubs in its 2026 class test
  • A forged face insert keeps impact soft, which is rare in a long-iron replacement
  • Variable Bounce Sole gets through tight lies and rough without digging

Reasons to think twice

  • Forgiveness scores 8.0, a step behind the best clubs in the class
  • Priced near the top of the utility iron market, and it is sold one club at a time
  • Launch runs high, so players who already hit a tall ball may find it balloons
