Callaway aimed the Opus SP+ at golfers who would rather control a wedge than lean on it. It spins, it stops, and it feels soft off the face, but it asks for a decent strike in return.
What's new
The Opus SP+ arrived at retail in March 2026 as a three-piece Spin Pocket design. Callaway pairs a forged 1025 face with a cast 8620 body and sets 18 g of tungsten into the topline.
Z, S and X grinds come in lofts from 54 to 60 degrees, all with Spin Gen 2.0 grooves. A TT Dynamic Gold S200 shaft and TT Icon grip come standard, and the price sits at the premium end for a single wedge.
How it plays
Feel and workability both score 9.2, and testing backs those numbers up. Reviewers described contact as low and soft, and they called it a refined players wedge whose main strengths are touch and shot-shaping.
Spin and stopping power were the other standouts, which fits an accuracy score of 8.8. Distance comes in at 8.2, a solid mark for a club whose job is to land the ball on a number and keep it there.
Where it lacks
Forgiveness scores 7.6, well short of its feel and workability marks. One test said plainly that this wedge is not for every golfer. Mis-hits around the green will not match the spin numbers.
At 7.0, value comes in last, a fair reflection of premium pricing on a club sold one at a time. The 54 to 60 degree loft range also stops short of a gap wedge, so a full set will need help from another model.
“It spins and feels like a players wedge should, but you have to strike it like one too.”- The Club Stand gear team
Reasons to buy
- Feel and workability both score 9.2, and testers singled out a low, soft sensation at impact
- Spin and stopping power stood out in testing, from a face cut with Spin Gen 2.0 grooves
- Z, S and X grinds give better players a real choice of sole for their turf and technique
Reasons to think twice
- Forgiveness scores 7.6, so off-center strikes find less cushion than the other scores suggest
- Each wedge carries a premium price, which drags value down to 7.0 and below everything else
- Lofts run only from 54 to 60 degrees, which leaves gap wedge buyers looking elsewhere
