PXG has rebuilt its Torpedo mallet around a zero-torque hosel and left the outline alone. Early hands-on time suggests the change was worth making, with soft feel and excellent distance control.

What's new

Torpedo ZT keeps the mallet shape of the original Torpedo but moves the shaft. An onset hosel now runs through the center of gravity with 1 degree of forward press, and the head balances toe-up, so the face can stay square without the hands helping.

A 303 stainless front, milled in a pyramid pattern, sits on a 6061 aluminum rear. Stock weight is 370 g, and two swappable 9 g sole weights let you run it from 357 to 392 g. Loft is 4 degrees, a PXG Slant Pistol grip comes fitted, and the price sits in premium-putter territory.

How it plays

Feel scores 9.2, its highest mark, and early hands-on time has been strongest on that number. Strikes come off soft with a bit of spring, and the first looks suggest this version may beat the previous Torpedo.

Forgiveness at 8.8 and accuracy at 8.7 sit close behind, which suits a straight-stroke putter built so its face does not rotate. Distance comes in at 8.6. Workability trails at 7.9, though few buyers of a zero-torque mallet will want to manipulate the face anyway.

Where it lacks

Torpedo ZT has been on sale for 11 days, so these scores lean on launch details and first looks rather than full testing. Expect the numbers to settle once longer reviews arrive.

Zero torque has a cost in feedback: golfers who like to feel a head working through the stroke may find this one dead. Value scores 7.7, its lowest number, and paying extra for a Pick-Up Pocket you never use stings a little.

“PXG kept the shape people like and took the twist out of the face. That is a smart trade.”

Reasons to buy

  • Shaft runs through the center of gravity, so the face resists twisting while the Torpedo look stays intact
  • Pyramid-milled 303 stainless face feels soft with a bit of pop, and early hands-on reviews praised both the feel and the distance control
  • Two 9 g sole weights move head weight anywhere from 357 to 392 g to suit your stroke

Reasons to think twice

  • Only 11 days on sale, so first looks exist but full test data does not yet
  • A Pick-Up Pocket in the sole adds nothing for golfers who never use it
  • Players who like feeling the head work in the stroke may find zero-torque balance dead
